Yes, by golly, the OHS Scholars Bowl season is underway despite no report on the team's competitions thus far having been supplied. With the days at OHS to date passing by at the pace of a sprinting OHS Bulldog during this Autumnal equinox season, the time to garner updates on the activities of the OHS Scholars Bowl team has been minimal. So for the Scholars Bowl moms and dads and other followers of the team here is a time-truncated (brief) summary.
The first engagement was comprised of the mental acuity of Seniors Grace William and Wyatt Wilson, Sophomore Jayla O'Leary, and Freshman Deecon Dill. These four competitors sojourned with Mr. Brown to Tescotton October 28 to represent OHS. The questions at this event were quite formidable with only one question answered between the two teams in two distinct rounds. The team concluded the evening with three wins out of eight rounds. The following week the team had two competitions back to back. Monday, November 4, Seniors Kate Kendig and Grace William, along with Freshman Deecon Dill and Camrun Taylor took up the mantle for OHS at Stockton. Stockton had invited only eight teams for this round-robin event. Of the seven rounds, the OHS team won four. This gave them a third-place finish, however, medals were only given to the top two teams. So close.
On Tuesday, November 5, Seniors Kate Kendig, and Wyatt Wilson, Junior: Mary Carlin, Sophomore Jayla O'Leary, and Freshman Josh Choate competed in the twenty-one team competition hosted by Lincoln. The questions at this Scholars Bowl were from the same company that Tescott used. Thus the questions were challenging. The team came away with three wins out of six total rounds. So they didn't make it into the final rounds.
That brings things up to the more recent time of Tuesday, November, 26 when Seniors Clay Guttery and Wyatt Wilson, Junior Mary Carlin, and Anna Kendig, and Sophomore Porter Choate competed in the Natoma Varsity Scholars Bowl. The questions at this competition were quite different than at the previous Varsity Scholars Bowls. Though some of the questions were rather long and worded awkwardly at times the team did well with them. The OHS crew bested five of the teams they went head-to-head with. They lost two rounds at this event to the two teams who took first and second in the pool which were St. John's of Beloit and TMP of Hays. Only the top two teams went on to the final rounds thus the OHS gladiators went home to start their Thanksgiving break.
To give you a little insight as to what lies ahead for the OHS Scholars Bowl team, the Freshman and Sophomores on the team have the opportunity to travel to Tipton to compete in a JV tournament on Wednesday, December 4. This will be the first Scholars Bowl Tipton has hosted in several years. Then Monday, December 9, the team will have the chance to defend their gold medal earned at Hill City last season. This will end the first half of this season. After Christmas Break the team will have several competitions in January including the Osborne Invitational occurring Thursday, January 9. In order to host a Scholars Bowl it takes many volunteers. So if you would like a front-row seat at a Scholars Bowl competition, get in touch with Mr. Rush or Mr. Blair, we could use the help.
Okay, that brings everything up to date for the OHS 2024/2025 Scholars Bowl season and it is dark out again. And though darkness is not an affirmative force it does reoccupy the space vacated by the light, which seems to occur quite often during this time of year and in other ways.
Be mindful that during this season there is a True light and may that light shine brightly upon you.
Go Dogs!!!
