The Osborne Robotics Club wrapped up their season with a very impressive performance at the FHSU Lego Robotics competition on March 25th.  The competition was attended by 20 different robotics clubs with a combined registration of 88 teams of students from grades 4th through 8th.  Despite the inclement weather, the ballroom was packed with excited students and whirling, spinning robots.

The Osborne Robotics Club participated in 4 different events, adapting their robots to be equipped and programmed appropriately for each activity.  All events required autonomous operation, meaning that the robot must detect and react to its environment independently, with no control from a student operator.

In the Sorting Colors event, the robot must follow a black line sorting red and blue objects to different sides of the line.  In the Catapult event, the robot must launch a ping pong ball at a pyramid stack of plastic cups and knock down as many as possible in two launch attempts.  In the Maze event, the robot must traverse a life sized maze from start to finish, with placement being determined by the speed in which the maze is completed.  In the Sumo Bots event, robots are pitted head to head against each other using sensors, scoops and an array of attack mechanisms to knock the opposing robot off of an elevated platform.

Medals were awarded for placing first through third in each event.  However, team points were awarded for placing in the top 5 (scaled according to placement).  The club was able to place in all 4 events with the following results:

Isaac Mick & Tyler Herrman took Second Place in Catapult, Fourth Place in Sumo Bots, and competed in Maze.

Korbin Heller & Allanna Lecuyer took Third Place in Catapult, Fifth Place in Maze, and competed in Sumo Bots.

Hallie Mick & Aubrey Gasper took Second Place in Sorting Colors and competed in Maze and Sumo Bots.

Frankie Delaney & Eve Mick took Third Place in Maze and competed in Catapult and Sumo Bots.

Carter Delaney & Tru Schultz took Third Place in Sumo Bots and competed in Maze and Catapult.

Konner McCra, Lincoln Lane, and Camden Wagoner competed in Maze, Catapult and Sumo Bots.

The excitement reached a pinnacle when five of the Osborne Robotics Club robots reached the elite eight of the Sumo Bots bracket.  Although we were beat out for first and second, Osborne essentially took the next five places in that event.  “Lets Go Osborne,” was probably heard throughout the entire Student Union!

Based on team points from all the events, Isaac Mick & Tyler Herrman were awarded for being the first place (highest scoring) team out of all the teams enrolled in the competition.  Finally, to conclude the awards ceremony, Osborne Robotics was recognized as the highest scoring robotics club out of all the clubs participating in the competition.  Spirits were high as we brought home the traveling Fort Hays Lego Robotics first place trophy.  Stop by to see it in the Osborne School Library.

Chris Mick, Andrew Sigle and Bobbi Schurr (coaches) would like to extend gratitude and a heartfelt thanks to the students who poured so much time and effort into this season as well as to the parents who were able to get students to early morning and weekend development sessions.  Your efforts and support have paid off in a big way this season.  We are excited to see what these young engineers have yet to accomplish!  We would also like to thank the McFadden Charitable Trust for grants to support our club equipment as well as Sims Fertilizer & Chemical for the sponsored team t-shirts.

Family and Community are welcome to join us for a final season showcase presenting our robots on April 22nd in the Sims Center from 5:30 to 7:00.  If you are unable to attend the showcase but would like to see some of the action, a few videos can be watched at the following link:
